Finished: Navy Blue 1940's Jumper + Life update!
Remember how I mentioned I had a job interview in my last post? Well I got the job!! I actually started this weekend and I have to say it is both exciting and scary. There is a bit about discretion in my contract so just to be safe I won't mention specifically where I work, but it is in a store of a large international brand :)
The finished project I'm sharing today is the navy blue jumper I mentioned working on in an earlier post. It is another 1940's pattern from the Australian Women's Weekly titled "Smart Jumper in Diamond Weave", dated 1942.
As is the case with most 1940s patterns, the pattern is designed for 4 ply but I decided to knit it in DK instead. I used Cygnet DK in Navy and ended up using a total of 490 grams, quite a lot for such a short, fitted jumper!
The stitch pattern is very simple - 5 rows of k2, p2, then at row 6 you work 'cables' to make the diagonal weave effect. The yoke is just garter stitch. I knitted the body of the jumper in the round up to the armholes because I wanted to 'feel' what it's like to knit in the round. I assumed it would be faster but it actually slowed me down a lot. No idea why though!
Because I knitted it with a thicker yarn I had to adjust the number of stitches. For the sleeves I was was completely off and when I put it on it was actually cutting off my circulation because it was so tight. Whoops. So I had to unravel it and re-knit the entire thing. Luckily the second one was perfect.
The pattern originally tells you to finish the neckline with a row of double crochet (British) but the regular cast off matches the garter stitch of the yoke perfectly so there was really no reason for it. There was also originally no opening at the neck, but I couldn't pull it over my head so I decided to add 2 buttons with crocheted button loops on each shoulder. And I actually think it looks much cuter that way anyway :)
And here's a sneak peek of my current project, which I am already nearly finished with! So you'll be seeing that one in a week or so. Lace lace lace lace lace <3

Really gorgeous! Can't wait to see the next one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Evie :)
DeleteI have a copy of this pattern. It's nice to see it knitted. It looks lovely on you and I imagine in DK it will be warmer to wear.
ReplyDeleteYes I love 4 ply but it's just not warm enough for me in winter! The DK makes the jumper nice and cozy :)
DeleteDear Renée, I'm so happy you got the job! It's very exciting :-)
ReplyDeleteYour jumper looks wonderful and the cute buttons adds extra cuteness. The design of the new jumper you are working on currently looks so interesting! I cannot wait to see the final result :-)

It's my first lace project and now I understand the hype!
DeleteWhat a wonderful fit. It looks amazing on you Renée! It doesn't look bulky as some jumpers do in dk. The new jumper looks very intriguing, can't wait to see it. Congratulations on your job! Theodora.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to your new job!
ReplyDeleteAnd that's a great jumper, love the colour and the knitting pattern. Very clever to make a plain joke to avoid it getting too thick around the shoulders.

Fabulous jumper, such a great stitch pattern. I am very intrigued by your new knit!
ReplyDeleteHuge congratulations, sweet dear! Way to go! I hope that you have a really wonderful time at your new job.
ReplyDeleteThis sweater is nothing short of gorgeous. I love the serene shade of blue, the neckline, the puffed shoulders, the two wee buttons - all of it. You are such a great knitter!
Big hugs & many thanks for your wonderfully nice comment on my latest outfit,
♥ Jessica
